It’s Lunar New Year! We were invited to celebrate with Universal Studios Hollywood during one of the best Lunar Celebrations we have ever been to. Ushering in the “Year of the Rat,” the Lunar New Year event is held from Thursday, January 23 through Sunday, February 9.
This fun festival is also included in the price of admission to the theme park! We had the best time meeting some fun characters, eating delish food, and taking photos of the beautiful surroundings for the event.
This year’s Lunar New Year event was held in Universal Plaza. The first things you notice are gorgeous red Chinese lanterns and plum blossom “Wishing Trees” all around. You truly feel like you are in China apart of their celebration.
But, what makes this even better is being able to meet some super fun and interactive characters! We began with Mr. Ping, Po’s father in Kung Fu Panda. We went to put in our noodle order and he created a totally interactive experience for us! Did you have the noodle dream yet? We are still waiting on ours…

Po and Tigress from the “Kung Fu Panda Adventure” attraction are also on hand Kung Fu Fighting and greeting guests! We had really fun interactions with both of them.
Guests can learn how to draw Po and take home the drawing as a keepsake memento and, on select days, community cultural performances featuring traditional lion dances will round out the program.
MEGATRON was also on hand greeting guests! The star of Universal Studios Hollywood’s thrill ride, “Transformers™: The Ride-3D.” was supposed to be speaking Mandarin while interacting with guests but, unfortunalty, that was going on when we were there. It was still a very cool interaction without that!
Minions also met with guests! They were goofy, fun, and liked messing with Eric the whole time! In their brightly colored traditional Lunar New Year attire, the Minions from the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem added a fun twist to the event!
We also met Shrek and Fiona while we were there! They weren’t apart of the festival, but still a fun character meet and greet, none the less.
Although we missed her, Hello Kitty will be available to meet guests at the Hello Kitty Shop located within the Animation Studio Store. We did find some really cute merchandise to bring home from the event. This plush Hello Kitty, Megatron, Po, and Minion are so cute! The Hello Kitty headband is fun for fans as well!
Guests can continue their Lunar New Year celebration at Universal CityWalk’s Dongpo Kitchen restaurant which features upscale and modern Sichuan cuisine. Inspired by China’s premier restaurant Meizhou Dongpo, Dongpo Kitchen offers the comforts of a casual dining environment with both indoor and al fresco seating and caters to an eclectic palate with a variety of signature dishes.
The world-famous Studio Tour is available in Mandarin at select times throughout the day. Featuring expertly-trained Mandarin-speaking tour guides, the experience provides insight into the world of movie-making magic as guests enjoy behind-the-scenes access to one of the largest production studios in the world. In-language park maps are also available for guests.
You need to visit the Lunar New Year celebration at Universal Hollywood before Sunday, February 9!
