The new year is here, and after the dumpster fire that was 2020, I think we are all ready to move forward and look to a great big beautiful tomorrow! The biggest event for theme park goers this year is easily the highly anticipated 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World resort. As 2021 begins, Walt Disney World is successfully moving through its planned reopening phases that are slowly bringing park operations back up to speed. Although the events of 2020 slowed down much of the progress of many projects planned for the big 50th birthday event, this year is still set to be a major resort-wide celebration with multiple new attractions, restaurants, and experiences. There are a number of new additions to the resort that have been delayed or have not had a concrete opening date announced. While we won’t be covering all of those uncertain openings in this article, we have included those that have a strong chance of opening in 2021.
Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
EPCOT is in the midst of a major parkwide refurbishment that is bringing a ton of new experiences to the park. One of the most notable is the upcoming stateside version of Disneyland Paris’ popular Ratatouille themed attraction. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure will debut sometime in 2021 in the France Pavilion of EPCOT’s World Showcase and give guests the chance to shrink down to rat-size and join the culinary loving rodent on an adventure through Gusteau’s Restaurant.
La Crêperie de Paris
EPCOT’s France Pavilion is also getting an expansion to fit the new Ratatouille attraction and with it comes a new restaurant. La Crêperie de Paris will most likely open with Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and is set to serve up sweet and savory crepes with a menu created by chef Jerome Bocuse. This location will be special in that it will offer guests both Table and Quick Service dining options.
World Showcase Lagoon in EPCOT is about to become awash with lights and sounds in the evenings with the addition of the new nighttime show Harmonious. This evening spectacular will feature massive projections on floating set pieces, LED screens, lasers, pyrotechnics, and more. The focus of the show is Disney music with selections from films like Moana, Brave, and Hercules. The show is being touted as the biggest nighttime spectacular made for a Disney park and some of the barges can already be seen in the lagoon as they will be used as massive fountains during the day. There is no set date for Harmonious to debut, but it’s clear that the new show is a priority for the company and we will probably see it opening this year.
Guests visiting EPCOT soon be able to enjoy a restaurant that’s out of this world! Space 220 is set to open sometime very soon near Mission Space in Future World. This new innovative eatery will let guests experience dining in a space station located 220 miles above the Earth. After boarding an elevator that takes you out of the atmosphere, you can enjoy real-time views of the planet as well as the vast reaches of space while dining on international cuisine. There is no concrete date for Space 220’s opening, but it will most likely happen when physical distancing guidelines are lifted at restaurants.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
The goofiest team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally getting an attraction at Walt Disney World! After the success of Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout at Disney California Adventure, Disney announced that the East Coast would be getting their own ride featuring the motley crew of space adventurers in EPCOT. Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout is set to be the world’s longest enclosed coaster and features a new coaster vehicle that rotates 360 degrees during the ride. While we aren’t completely sure that this attraction will open in 2021 due to delays in construction, Disney has said that it will open as part of the 50th anniversary of the resort, so we are holding out hope!
The old Wonders of Life building at EPCOT is currently getting a major overhaul to welcome guests to a new interactive area of the park. The PLAY! Pavilion is set to be an indoor city where guests can mingle and interact with favorite Disney characters in fun new ways. The area will feature games like virtual water balloon fights and the ability to help Incredibles’ designer Edna Mode come up with fashionable super suits. The PLAY! Pavilion was originally announced to open in 2021, but since the shutdown, there has not been any word on its progress. Construction is still moving forward so we are hopeful for a 2021 debut.
Moana: Journey of Water
Moana will be getting her first attraction with the addition of a new interactive experience to EPCOT. Moana: Journey of Water will be a walkthrough attraction allowing guests to interact with magical living water in a lush tropical setting. The attraction will also teach guests about the importance of the natural water cycle. We don’t have much news on this attraction at this point. There have been rumors that it will not debut in 2021, but Disney has said that work is still progressing on the attraction, so we are hopeful for an opening this year.
TRON Lightcycle Run
Magic Kingdom is about to get a bit more thrilling with the addition of a new rollercoaster in Tomorrowland. TRON Lightcycle Run is making its way from Shanghai Disneyland and bringing its neon-colored cycles to the U.S. Guests will board 2-wheeled lightcycles featured in the movie TRON Legacy and make a fast-paced journey through The Grid. This attraction was a hit when it opened in Shanghai and is expected to be as big when it debuts at Walt Disney World. We don’t have an official opening date yet, but work has been moving fast on the new attraction and will most likely open during the 50th anniversary.
Roundup Rodeo BBQ
Toy Story Land has been humming along since its opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2018. Disney announced that the land would be getting an expansion with the addition of a new Table Service restaurant very soon. Roundup Rodeo BBQ will follow the same theme of Toy Story Land with Andy setting up a tiny restaurant for his toys to enjoy. There hasn’t been much news on this new restaurant lately, but construction is still visibly happening so we think we will most likely see it open before the end of 2021.
Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser
If stepping inside of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios doesn’t scratch your itch to live in a galaxy far, far away, then you’re in luck! Disney is working hard on finishing a new vacation experience that will allow you to live out a Star Wars adventure aboard a spaceship traveling the galaxy. Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser will be a new hotel experience that will allow guests to immerse themselves in Star Wars and stay aboard a space cruise ship while participating in activities and adventures. The experience is expected to include immersive details like dressing the part and lightsaber training. There will also be an away mission where you will take a shuttle down to the planet of Batuu where your story will extend to the new Galaxy’s Edge land. Disney has not said when the new interactive hotel experience will open, but has maintained that it will be part of the 50th anniversary.
