What’s Coming to Walt Disney World in 2022? Let’s break it down!

2021 brought us so many new and returning magical moments at Walt Disney World. But, what does 2022 have in store? The answer: a lot! 2022 is the 40th anniversary of EPCOT and the celebration will continue from 2021 right into 2022!

From a new way to get to your Walt Disney World vacation, to all-new attractions opening, 2022 has a lot to cover so we have broken it all down here for you!

Mears Connect Transportation Orlando

Mears Connect

We broke the sad news earlier this year that Disney’s Magical Express would permanently retire on January 1st, 2022. Magical Express was a “free” shuttle bus that took you from Orlando International Airport to your Disney resort hotel.

The Mears Transportation Company announced they would offer a paid replacement for Disney’s Magical Express called “Mears Connect”. You will be able to book Mears Connect ahead of your stay through your travel advisor or directly with Mears. The shuttle will offer a couple of different options with different price points. Take a look at the pricing in our most recent post here: Reservations and Pricing Now Available for Magical Express Replacement

Magicband+

We told you MagicBands weren’t going anywhere, and sure enough… Disney announced not only are they here to stay, but they are going to get a few magical enhancements. A new “MagicBand+” will be available for purchase beginning next year, including a discounted, pre-arrival price for Disney Resort hotel guests as well as new and renewing Walt Disney World Annual Passholders.

Current MagicBands will continue to be available, too, along with the complimentary Disney MagicMobile service that extends MagicBand features, such as park entry, to smart devices. MagicBand+ will help immerse you in Disney stories and connect with characters you love like never before.

The wearable will allow you to engage with favorite Disney moments in new ways, including:

  • Play like a bounty hunter in a galaxy far, far away and find virtual bounties throughout Black Spire Outpost in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
  • Interact with the “Disney Fab 50 Character Collection,” the golden sculptures spread throughout the Walt Disney World theme parks.
  • Experience nighttime spectaculars in a new way as you see your band light up and complement the magic in the skies, including the new “Harmonious” at EPCOT and “Disney Enchantment” at Magic Kingdom.

Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser

On March 1st, 2022 a brand-new adventure “in-space” will take place at Walt Disney World. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is a revolutionary new 2-night experience where you are the hero. You and your group will embark on a first-of-its-kind Star Wars adventure that’s your own. It’s the most immersive Star Wars story ever created—one where you live a bespoke experience and journey further into a Star Warsadventure than you ever dreamed possible.

Arrive at the Walt Disney World Resort terminal, board a launch pod and rendezvous with the magnificent Halcyon starcruiser. Stay in a cabin or suite with an exquisite view of space. Throughout the ship, you’ll interact with an eclectic collection of characters, sit down to exotic galactic cuisine and perhaps even plot a secret mission together. As the itinerary continues, you’ll take the story further and deeper. Choose your path. Seek out the inner workings of the legendary starship, learn the traditional art of wielding a lightsaber and even jump on a transport to the planet Batuu—where your mission continues at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge!

'Hey, Disney!': Amazon and Disney

Amazon “Hey Disney” by Alexa

A new way to interactin your home and Disney Resort Hotel Room is coming in 2022! “Hey, Disney!” will be available both in-room at Disney Resort hotels and on supported Amazon Echo devices at home.

“It’s going to give guests the ability to sort of interact with our beloved characters in entirely new ways” said Dan Soto, vice president of Technology and Digital for Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “Hey, Disney!” was designed to make the Alexa experience even more magical with things like jokes, interactive trivia with your family, personal greetings from our characters, soundscapes and more,” Soto said. “It will absolutely include authentic character voices, original recordings, unique audio environments inspired by our films and our destinations around the world and over 1,000 magical interactions for our guests to discover.” It’s not yet clear how much it will cost to buy on the Alexa Skills Store for use at home. Details will be released on amazon.com/heydisney.

TRON Lightcycle Power Run Shanghai Disneyland

TRON Lightcycle Run

Both TRON Lightcycle Run and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind were announced at D23 in 2017, with projections having them both open by October 1, 2021. Since Disney World’s 50th anniversary announcement, Disney has not updated whether these rides are officially delayed or on track. Disney has not yet confirmed whether TRON will be opening in 2021 or delayed until 2022. This doesn’t mean it will not open in 2021, it just means that they haven’t officially released that date yet. Time is running out in 2021 so the assumption can be made that the new coaster will open in 2022.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

While there is no official opening or delayed date yet (just like Tron Lightcycle Run), Disney announced the next major attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, will open in 2022!!  We would love to see Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind open for the anniversary!

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is part of EPCOT’s big transformation and will be located in Future World as one of the longest indoor roller coasters ever built. The ride vehicles will have 360-degree movement and the story will follow the Guardians on a fun-filled adventure (and there will be a rockin’ mix tape!).

Moana Journey of Water

Moana- Journey of Water

In 2019, Disney announced that an all-new attraction themed after the story of Moana would be arriving at EPCOT. The new attraction will be called Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana and, according to Disney officials, will be the “first-ever experience inspired by the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ hit film [and] will let Guests interact with magical, living water in a beautiful and inspiring setting.”

Construction has begun on the attraction at EPCOT but at this time we do not have an official opening date. Just like Guardians, we hope this attraction debuts for EPCOT’s 40th anniversary in 2022!
