One of the hardest things about planning a vacation as a plus-size person is worrying about the embarrassment that follows if you don’t fit into a ride or attraction. It can be outright mortifying to be denied entry to a ride because of your size.
Thankfully, Walt Disney World does an excellent job making most of their attractions fit guests of all shapes and sizes. However, for some guests that carry most of their weight in their bellies, it might be a little uncomfortable to ride a few attractions. We think it is important for you to know before you go so you can avoid any issues that might arise in the parks!
We have started a series that will breakdown the rides at each Walt Disney World park and give you some insight to what you may experience as a plus-sized guest in the parks. We chose Magic Kingdom as the first as they have the most rides of all four parks!
**It is also important to mention that during the hottest times of the year it might be a different fit in a ride than others. If you feel like a ride car might be too tight of a fit for you and another guest, it is important to speak up to a Cast Member. They will discreetly allow you to sit in a ride car alone.
Magic Kingdom Attractions
Astro Orbiter: If you have longer legs and a belly it might be a little a squeeze for the short time the ride is in “orbit” but it really isn’t that uncomfortable.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: This ride has a bench seat that seats two. There is a lap bar but it adjusts to you and comfortable legroom.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin: Such a fun ride and you will have no issue. It’s in an air-conditioned building so it is a great place to escape the heat too!
Dumbo the Flying Elephant: It is a bench seat for two. If you have another guest that is smaller it’s a perfect fit. If not, I would ride alone. There is an extra-long seatbelt so you don’t feel squeezed at all.
Haunted Mansion: Lots of room. Bench seat for two. Bar comes down but it doesn’t restrict movement at all. Two people fit comfortably.
it’s a small world: This is a boat ride with a bench seat that has a lot of room.
Jungle Cruise: Bench seating in a boat. No restraint and you have lots of room(Although they pack the boats in and you may be right next to a stranger.
Mad Tea Party: Some people complain about this ride as the circle in the center makes it uncomfortable to get in and out of the ride. It also has a lot of swinging back and forth into the person next to you while you are spinning.
Peter Pans Flight: This is a bench seat and fits two people comfortably with no issue. There is a bar that comes down, similar to Haunted Mansion, but there is no contact with your body.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Boat ride, lots of room for your legs and no lap restraint. Make sure you hold on getting in and out as the floor and seat may be wet.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train: This ride will be the tightest fit for some at Magic Kingdom. Some guests do not fit due to the tight space for your legs in the ride car. The squeeze forces you to raise your knees making your thighs and tummy to be really compressed. They do turn away several people a day on this attraction for not getting the lap bar locked. Cast Members are very gracious if this happens. Don’t be upset if you don’t fit!
Space Mountain: This ride has single seats that are really low, it may be a little tough to get into if you have knee problems. However, there is a lot of leg room in this ride and very comfortable.
Splash Mountain: This is a bench seat with no lap bar but you may be a little cramped if you ride with another guest.
The Barnstormer: If you have another guest that is smaller it’s a perfect fit. If not, I would ride alone.
The Magic Carpets of Aladdin: It is a bench seat for two. If you have another guest that is smaller it’s a perfect fit. If not, I would ride alone. There is an extra-long seatbelt so you don’t feel squeezed at all.
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: This is a bench seat and fits two people comfortably with no issue. There is a bar that comes down, similar to Peter Pans Flight, but there is no contact with your body.
Tomorrowland Speedway: This is a very small car that is low to the ground. If you have mobility issues, this might be an issue. Seat is a bench that has a seatbelt to hold 2 guests comfortably.
Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover: This is a two bench, slow moving ride. I would sit on one side alone or with a smaller friend. No lap belt or bar. Lots of room.
Under the Sea- Journey of the Little Mermaid: This ride has a bench seat with a bar that comes down just like Haunted Mansion. Two fit comfortably.
